The next artist we love is Christine Garvey, a Brooklyn-based artist who specializes in drawings, prints & collage. Christine studied Printmaking & Drawing at Washington University in St Louis and went on to study with Master Printer Kitikong Tilokwattanotai at Chiang Mai Art on Paper Studios in Thailand. She currently teaches DIY Printmaking at 3rd Ward’s collaborative art center in Brooklyn.

On March 30th 2011, Christine will be showing at the Blind Barber Gallery Bar in the East Village, NYC. This body of work, entitled Reformations, features drawings and collage inspired by transformations, in collaboration with New Rome Clothing designer, Corey Mintz. Inspired by New Rome’s identity, the elephant, she uses animal forms to explore ideas of transformation.

Christine writes:

“My work began as a way of understanding the human form. I examined the graceful movement of figures and the unanticipated expression of faces, filtering my observations through drawings, collage, and mixed media works on paper. With time I learned the art of exaggeration. My drawings began to morph, each one shifting between something monstrous and something human.  With misshapen bodies and dislocated limbs, my creations, while completed, did not appear fully whole.  It is through this ‘semi-human’ form that I began to explore the physical and psychological notions of wholeness.

I touch upon these ideas with my new drawing series Reformations. Inspired by the transgressive beauty of animal shapes and textures, and the unpredictable movement of ink on paper, the series depicts a set of ever-evolving creatures in various states of transformation. While each drawing contains fragments of recognizable animal forms—a  beak, a tusk, a trunk, the creature itself appears in a state of flux, not having reached its fully-realized state. Reformations aims to capture these brief moments of struggle in each creature’s quest to find its final and completed form.”

This work will be on view for one night only: Wednesday, March 30 / 8:30-10pm
