Art Cart NYC™ to premiere its first exhibition, Neon Seduction, at the FAB! Festival and Block Party on Saturday, September 25th, 2010.
New York, NY. Art Cart NYC™ is a mobile gallery that contributes to the practice of art in alternative spaces by hosting exhibitions around New York City. Art Cart NYC™’s first exhibition, Neon Seduction, will debut at the FAB! Festival and Block Party on September 25th, 2010, featuring artwork by Corey D’Augustine, Duncan Malashock, Erin Wahed, and Amia Yokoyama.
The works in Neon Seduction, curated by Margaret Knowles, pose a challenge to the concept of the “real,” and allow for an experience of the freeing power of the artificial. Most objects consumed in today’s world are produced not from nature, but from humans or even machines. Images are no longer mimetic, but exist as form and color with no referent in nature. Created in virtual spaces, based on intricately constructed codes and systems, and existent in worlds foreign to our own, the works in Neon Seduction challenge the concept of coherence, reject essentialism and biology, and seduce the subject into forgetting its own imagined origin.
On Saturday, September 25th, Fourth Arts Block will be showcasing the best of the upcoming fall season for free at their FAB! Festival and Block Party. At the event, Art Cart NYC™ will be presenting alongside multiple stages, which will be used for performances of dance, theater, and music. Also offered at the party will be a selection of local artisans and gourmet food vendors, film screenings, installations, hands-on activities, and classes.
Art Cart NYC™ was founded in May 2010 by Hannah Flegelman. The project was inspired by the mobile food and beverage cart craze, as well as DIY and pop up galleries that have taken hold of the city since the 2009 economic downturn. In an attempt to branch out from the typical art hubs in Chelsea and Museum Mile, Art Cart NYC™ will stage an exhibition in a truck and show it in a new neighborhood, reaching out to various communities. The aim of the project is to use the physical dimensions and confines of a truck to encourage everyone, from artists and curators to the visitors themselves, to think imaginatively about exhibiting art.
